What is Fosamax (Alendronate) prescribed for?

Fosamax (Alendronate) is a prescription medication that prevents and treats osteoporosis (bone loss). Thinner bones are more likely to break when they are affected by osteoporosis. Taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for an extended period of time increases your risk of osteoporosis. Slowing bone loss is the mechanism by which this medication works. How To Use Fosamax (Alendronate)?

You should take this once daily by mouth on an empty stomach.

Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of plain water (6-8 ounces or 180-240 milliliters). Keep it away from chewing and sucking. Stand or Sit upright for at least 30 minutes after taking alendronate. Talk to your doctor if you experience pain when swallowing the tablets.

If you consume anything other than plain water within 30 minutes of taking alendronate, the medication will not work. Wait at least one or two hours after taking the medication before eating or drinking anything else.

This medication should not be taken at bedtime or just before rising for the day as it may not be absorbed properly.

There are some foods and beverages that can decrease the absorption of alendronate, such as calcium or iron supplements, vitamins, antacids, coffee, tea, soda, mineral water, calcium-enriched juices, and coffee. Following alendronate administration, wait at least 30 minutes (preferably one to two hours) before taking these.

If you want to get the most benefit from this medication, you need to take it regularly. Use it every morning at the same time. Using this medication long-term may have risks and benefits. Consult your doctor for more information.
